imagine then a simple future
reflected on as many times before
till light begins to shiver it to bits

time stops or trips and you
run madly just to halt the monologue
of variations and alternatives

silence puts a hand up in the back
the light goes dark or so it would appear
awareness stiffens catatonic and inert

deflecting fantasies of black detail
you want to fight the shrinking edge
that holds you up against your will

but why is here and what is where
perception of perception blurs in time
with nowhere feelings lost beside restricted dreams

and drifting downward counting out
unequal turns of night and day you wonder still
if you must drown or simply pray
