Evolution has programmed us to recognize depth, brightness, contrast, and more as part of a visual strategy for survival. Two-dimensional images mess with those lessons in ways that are exciting and confusing. These images have been created conceptually with spreadsheet data, yet they have visual elements of depth and perspective as satisfying and real as those in photographs.
